Gordon Lindhurst MSP has met with the Secretary of State for Defence, Sir Michael Fallon, in Edinburgh to discuss the future of Glencorse, Craigiehall and Redford Cavalry and Infantry Barracks. Also present to discuss Redford Cavalry and Infantry Barracks were Edinburgh councillors Elaine Aitken and Jason Rust, who represent Fairmilehead and Colinton ward where the barracks are situated.
Gordon Lindhurst MSP, a former member of the then Scottish Yeomanry, HQ Division Lothian and Borders Horse (now the Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry) said:
“The meeting was very constructive and it was good to receive assurances that the MOD will continue to engage directly with the local council on issues arising from the proposed closure of the barracks for those affected and the local communities. It was encouraging to hear directly from the Secretary of State about the UK Government’s commitment to increasing the size of the Scottish army as well as his willingness to look again at specific issues surrounding the soldiers and their families stationed in Edinburgh and Lothian.
When it comes to the defence of the United Kingdom, the safety and integrity of these islands cannot be compromised, and our defence infrastructure requires to be fit for purpose and HM forces ever combat ready. Again, it was extremely encouraging to hear directly of the UK government’s commitment to this.”
