Lothian MSP Gordon Lindhurst was delighted to present two fair trade awards to pupils at Wester Hailes Education Centre.
The MSP, who is also the Deputy Convener of the Cross party Group on Fair Trade, presented S3 student representatives Brogan and Jack with the certificates, alongside their Geography teacher Miss Lamb.
The school has achieved Fairtrade status at level 1 (FairAware) and at level 2 (FairActive) through a range of activities. These have included learning about where the school is in terms of understanding and taking action for Fairtrade, such as hosting cake sales and school breakfasts using Fairtrade products.
Lindhurst visited the school to award the certificates as they embark on work to achieve level 3 status, where the school will have fully embedded Fairtrade into their daily life and work to raise awareness of Fairtrade throughout their community.
Speaking after the visit, Lindhurst said:
“I regularly meet with people and organisations from across the world who benefit from the Fairtrade label and I know just how important it is.
“To have local schools working hard to adopt a Fairtrade mindset amongst themselves and in the local community is very welcome and cannot be underestimated.
“I wish the pupils and teachers all the very best as they work towards achieving level 3 status.”
Geography teacher Miss Stacey Lamb said: " I have been delighted how engaged and passionate about Fair trade my Geography pupils have become. They are committed to taking action at a local level with the knowledge of how this affects others globally. "
