Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Lothian region, Gordon Lindhurst, has today welcomed figures that show Edinburgh airport has set a record for the number of passengers it has welcomed through it's doors.
The Scottish Conservative and Unionist member, who is also the Convener of the Economy, Jobs and Fair Work committee in the Scottish Parliament, praised those involved in achieving the success.
Statistics show that last month Edinburgh took care of 1,173,953 passengers, a rise of 6.8% on the previous year. This increase in passenger numbers was mainly driven by international passengers, where there was a 15.1% increase year on year.
Commenting after the figures were announced, Gordon said:
"This is fantastic news, not just for Edinburgh airport and the hard working people employed there, but for the Scottish economy as a whole. The increase in numbers reflects the addition of new flight routes in and out of the airport but also the attractiveness of Edinburgh as a destination for tourists.
Continuing this trend, which could lead to a record breaking year, is good for our economy; more people flying in to our capital means greater use of services and additional spending on our world-renowned products, leading to more jobs for our people. Edinburgh is a fantastic city to visit and I am confident we can maintain and extend these trends."
